Marula Oil
What is marula?
The marula tree, Sclerocarya birrea, grows across southern Africa, where its plum-sized yellow fruit is gathered every summer. Inside each fruit is a hard nut holding small kernels, and those kernels are pressed for a light, golden oil. Marula oil has been used on skin and hair in southern Africa for generations, and today it is one of the most prized oils in luxury skincare.
What is in it
| Compound | What it is |
|---|---|
| Oleic acid (omega-9) | The main fatty acid, around two thirds of the oil, which softens and nourishes skin |
| Palmitic and linoleic acids | Fatty acids that support the skin's natural barrier |
| Natural antioxidants | Help keep the oil stable and fresh |
Why we chose it
Marula is the second ingredient in Bio Retinol Elixir. It gives the formula its silky, cushioning feel and helps skin hold on to moisture, so it looks soft, supple and smooth through the day.
What does the research show?
In a clinical study published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology, researchers tested marula oil on groups of 20 women. It was non-irritating on the skin, it improved hydration on dry skin, and it helped reduce the water skin loses through its surface.
The study tested pure marula oil, not a finished product, but it supports what makes marula so well loved: it is gentle and keeps skin comfortable and moisturised.
How we use it
Marula oil is part of Bio Retinol Elixir, our day face oil, alongside bakuchi, rosehip and squalane. It contains no retinol, no water and no synthetic fragrance.
Use 6 drops each morning on clean skin, pressed in gently, then follow with SPF.
Frequently asked questions
Is marula oil a nut oil?
Yes. Marula oil is pressed from the kernels inside the marula nut. If you have a nut allergy, review the full ingredient list with your doctor before use.
Is marula oil good for dry skin?
Yes. Marula is rich in oleic acid, which makes it especially comforting for dry skin. In our formula it is balanced with lighter oils so it suits most skin types.
Marula oil or argan oil?
Both are nourishing. Marula is a little lighter and silkier, which is why we use it as a lead oil in Bio Retinol Elixir. The formula contains argan too.
Which Sapphire Botanics product contains marula oil?
Bio Retinol Elixir, our day face oil. It is also included in the Discovery Set and Power Couple.
